Refractive Errors

Hyperopia
Hyperopia

Hyperopia is one of the refractive errors of the eye and is defined as a problem with seeing nearby objects clearly. People with hyperopia can see distant objects clearly, while nearby objects appear blurry. This condition is caused by the eyeball being shorter than normal or the cornea and lens not bending light sufficiently, resulting in light being focused behind the retina.

Causes of Hyperopia

Hyperopia can occur due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The main causes are:

  • Genetic Predisposition: Children of individuals with hyperopia are more likely to develop the condition.
  • Anatomical Differences in Eye Structure: A shorter than normal eyeball or an insufficiently curved cornea can cause light to focus behind the retina.
  • Age-Related Changes: Especially after age 40, loss of flexibility in the eye lens can make hyperopia more noticeable.

Symptoms of Hyperopia

Hyperopia is usually noticed in childhood or adulthood. Common symptoms include:

  • Blurry vision of nearby objects
  • Eye fatigue and headaches
  • Burning sensation in the eyes after prolonged reading or computer use
  • Difficulty focusing

Degrees of Hyperopia

Hyperopia is measured by the diopter (D) value indicated in a glasses or contact lens prescription:

  • Low Hyperopia: Between +0.25D and +2.00D
  • Moderate Hyperopia: Between +2.00D and +5.00D
  • High Hyperopia: +5.00D and above

Treatment Methods for Hyperopia

Hyperopia can be corrected through various methods:

  • Glasses and Contact Lenses: The most commonly used methods. Convex lenses correctly focus light onto the retina.
  • Laser Eye Surgery (LASIK, PRK): Surgical procedures that offer a permanent solution. The cornea is reshaped to ensure correct focusing of light.
  • Multifocal Lenses: Special lenses used during cataract surgery can correct hyperopia.

Methods to Prevent Hyperopia

The following steps are recommended to slow or prevent the progression of hyperopia:

  • Limit screen time and rest your eyes regularly
  • Work under proper lighting conditions
  • Spend time outdoors in daylight daily
  • Have regular eye examinations

Hyperopia is a common vision disorder that affects quality of life. However, it can be managed with proper treatment and preventive measures. Don’t neglect regular eye check-ups to protect your eye health!
